With Bag Ban Looming, the City's Taking Local Business to School

Confused about Austin’s coming bag ban? You’re not alone.

The training is designed prepare businesses for the plastic bag ban .

Originally, the ban barred the use of most single use paper and plastic bags, but late last week the . Now, restaurants will largely be exempt.

Opponents argue the exemptions may create a loophole for businesses, like grocery stores, that sell both prepared foods and other products. So in attempt to make sure businesses are thoroughly versed in what’s allowed and what isn’t, the training sessions will provide an overview of the  â€� including fines. Businesses caught breaking the rules can face penalties ranging from $100 to $2,000.

The first of the two training session begins at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. Seating will be limited to 150 attendees per session, but businesses can
